Since the marketing of 5G as an enterprise solution to make possible new business applications, vendors and consultants have been on overdrive – selling 5G as the ideal partner for IoT-led applications.
According to KPMG, 5G networks offer tremendous benefits to manufacturers in terms of data speed, latency, efficiency, reliability, capacity and security. 5G delivers fibre optic capacity at lower cost, with more flexibility.
“Manufacturers are attracted by the many gains IoT offers: less machine downtime, higher product quality, predictive maintenance and more informed decision making. 5G will enable several use cases that were previously limited, due to lower throughput and performance,” noted KPMG.
“IoT presents both operators and industries with a fertile ground for innovations and new ways of engaging their end customers. Key success factors will be the ability to launch new services with a short time-to-market from idea to commercial offering combined with the right business models and access to a rich array of complementary offerings from ecosystem partners,” said Paolo Colella, board advisor with triPica.
Eric Hui, director of IoT business development at Equinix Asia-Pacific, cautions 5G, on its own, may not necessarily bring about the zero-latency experience users might be clamouring for.
