FutureIoT QuickTakes: IoT and cloud symbiosis

Eric Hui, director of IoT business development at Equinix Asia-Pacific, says by design IoT devices are connected to the Internet, hence Internet of Things. In the early days, IoT sensors and devices were monolithic and simple in the information they acquired, stored or transmitted. This could be temperature, pressure or carbon dioxide levels.

However, in the course of its journey towards maturation, IoT applications have expanded to include images and audio. When transmitting images, the traditional channel such as narrow-band IoT or nb-IoT may no longer be efficient for the application.

“From that standpoint, there needs to be a way to efficiently transmit these data to store it, compute it and learn from it. The cloud is the new channel,” concluded Hui.
